DesignMeets… HealthCare is back again to help those on the frontier of design and innovation connect and collaborate around the questions and issues of improvement to our health care system as a patient and as a provider. (Check out the first HealthCare event recap here).

Patient Care can come in many forms and patient-centered care is a term that is often taken lightly.
How do we put patients’ needs back at the core of the service that our Health Care system provides? How do we move from designing experiences “at” patients towards designing “with” patients so that they are truly at the centre of our health care experience design processes?
Join us to:
- (Re)Connect with one another over snacks and refreshments
- Hear interesting speakers discuss their areas of expertise within the design and health care realms
- Network with professionals with diverse interests, working at the intersection of health care and design.
- After the talks, we will be migrating across the street to the Duke of Somerset for drinks and more socializing.

Easiest way to reach the Centre for Global eHealth:
The Centre is housed in the R Fraser Elliott (RFE) Wing, which is a 5 storey building accessible ONLY via the Elliott (purple) elevators. If you find yourself going through a set of revolving doors, you are in the wrong wing. When you walk in through the main glass doors of RFE, you will see our Corporate offices to your left and the Elliott elevators towards your right. Take these elevators up to the 4th floor. You will see doors to the Centre for Global eHealth Innovation in front.
Please note: the basement of the RFE Building is the Emergency Department (entrance through Gerrard Street), please do not enter through there. Kindly come around to Elizabeth street and enter the building on the main floor.
After the event we will be moving to the Duke of Somerset on 655 Bay Street for those who would like to continue the conversation over a drink or two.

Speakers
1. Emily Nicholas – Patients’ Association of Canada
After serving as a board member for the Patients’ Association of Canada for over two years, Emily is currently serving as a speaker, adviser and researcher. She has represented the Association at many conferences and workshops and taken part in round-table policy discussions with provincial organizations such as the Ministry of Health and Public Health Ontario, and federal groups such as the Health Council of Canada and CIHI. Recently, she has been collaborating on a project which aims to bring the patient voice to the design of new health care technologies and software. She is currently working on a project related to physicians use of social media. Emily has also had a great deal of experience as a patient.
2. Peter Jones – Design for Care, Author
Peter is associate professor at Toronto’s OCAD University, where he is a senior fellow of the Strategic Innovation Lab and teaches in the Strategic Foresight and Innovation MDes program. Peter founded the Redesign Network in 2001 in the US, now located in Toronto. Redesign conducts design and research that advances collaborative and knowledge practices in healthcare, professional practice, and information services.
3. Stefan Popowycz – Senior Information Designer, Senior Business Systems Analyst, Canadian Institute for Health Information (CIHI)
Stefan is a data scientist, experienced information designer and architect, and innovative technologist that specializes on the visual possibilities that occur at the intersection between data-and-design. Stefan has 8+ years of advanced analytics experience, possesses extensive knowledge of Canadian healthcare data, and was the lead information architect for CIHI’s successful Canadian Hospital Reporting Project (CHRP) interactive data visualization website. Currently, he is leading both the information design and data architecture for CIHI’s Health System Performance (HSP) interactive infographic website, a project that aims to communicate the complexities of health system metrics to the Canadian public, using simplified infographic techniques for visual communication and storytelling.
4. Joe Cafazzo – Lead at the Centre for Global eHealth Innovation
Dr. Cafazzo has been an active researcher of the use of technology to facilitate patient self-care of complex chronic conditions such as diabetes, asthma, end-stage renal disease, and congestive heart failure. He has advised and conducted research for public sector policy makers and private sector medical technology companies on the design and safety of technology in healthcare. He teaches and conducts research in the areas of human factors, clinical engineering, and health informatics. In 2010 he was the recipient of the Career Scientist award by the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long Term Care.
