A system built around acute care, where patients passively receive treatments, is slowly adapting and realizing the importance of the user experience. This means going beyond the “expert perspective” and into the trenches of real world contexts. Without engaging real people in a design process, without learning about them and their everyday lives, it is unlikely the process, service or product created will be successful.

Format

• Each speaker will have about 5 minutes to present ideas using just 5 images.
• A Q&A panel period will follow the talks.
• Then stay on to mix & mingle over snacks and refreshments.

Laura is a Clinical Nurse Specialist in the Adolescent and Young Adult (AYA) Program at Princess Margaret Cancer Centre and an Adjunct Lecturer with the Lawrence S. Bloomberg Faculty of Nursing, University of Toronto. Laura received her BScN and MN degrees from the University of Toronto and has a BA degree from McGill University.

Francie Kendal

Team Lead for the Apotex Family Mentor Program

As co-chair of the Family Advisory Council for the Apotex Jewish Home for the Aged at Baycrest, Francie Kendal participated in a multi-disciplinary review of the admissions process. To address gaps in service identified during the review, the Apotex Family Mentor Program was created in 2012. She is currently Team Lead for the Mentor Program which offers one-to-one peer support for family members of new residents to the home.

Associate & Design Director at Entro

Cynthia is an Associate at Entro and currently serves as a Chapter Chair at the Society for Experiential Graphic Design. With a background in industrial design, experiential graphic design, and user-experience design, Cynthia has contributed her expertise to the development of a number of local and international wayfinding and signage programs, including the most recent world-class medical facility in Qatar.
